Radiographers across Victoria gathered last week at the Radiographer Training Centre in the Monash Reading and Assessment Service (RAS) at Moorabbin Hospital for an engaging and practical workshop to explore screening techniques and best practices that support care for clients of all body types.
Because every client is different, radiographers must be able to adapt their positioning and imaging approach. The workshops are designed to strengthen confidence in techniques that support clients of varying body shapes and sizes while maintaining image quality.
A key feature of the workshop was the involvement of practice model Kim. Through live demonstrations, radiographers were able to observe positioning techniques and imaging approaches in a realistic setting, gaining insight into how adjustments can be made to support clients with different bodies.
Reflecting on the value Kim brought to the workshop, Elizabeth Stewart, Deputy Chief Radiographer/Tutor Radiographer said, “We are blessed to have again sourced a consumer model, and Kim is adept at becoming whatever client presentation we want her to be to demonstrate different adaptations and techniques for optimising ergonomics for radiographers and the quality of the images.”
The workshop also marked a successful trial of an evening session, highlighting radiographers’ commitment to ongoing learning and development during flexible times. “It was amazing to see the dedication of some who travelled across town to attend and show their passion for mammography,” Elizabeth added.
The workshop was well received, with participants appreciating the hands-on training in a supportive space. Many found it valuable to see techniques demonstrated in person and to share experiences with other radiographers.
“The training was informative and hands-on. It was great to learn new techniques while also brushing up on existing ones. Having a breast model made the learning experience much easier to understand, and the handout provided was detailed and highly resourceful. Overall, it was definitely worth catching two trains and a bus to attend.” Padma Devaraj, Radiographer stated.
By building practical skills and confidence, the workshop helped radiographers enhance the screening experience for clients with different needs while supporting high-quality imaging.
