Celebrating Sue Viney for National Volunteer Week

This National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to celebrate Sue, a longstanding member and current coChair of our Consumer Advisory Group, whose contribution has helped shape BreastScreen Victoria in meaningful and lasting ways.

Sue’s connection with our organisation began almost 18 years ago in the most unexpected way; a sign in a window asking for people who use the service to get involved in helping improve that service. That small moment of curiosity led her to a place where her lived experience, thoughtful insight and steady leadership have had a profound impact.

Over nearly two decades, Sue has played an integral role, not only as a committed member but as a collaborative and highly respected coChair of the Consumer Advisory Group. Her dedication ensures that consumer voices remain central to how our service evolves.

In recognition of her contribution, Sue was named a finalist in the 2025 Victorian Volunteer Awards, an external acknowledgement of the influence she has had both within our organisation and across the broader community.

When asked to describe her approach as coChair, Sue sums it up in three words: “inclusive, listening and impact”. These values reflect her belief in the power of lived experience to inform better services and stronger outcomes.

For anyone who’d like to hear more from Sue, she features in the first episode of the BreastScreen Victoria podcast, Behind the Screen, alongside CEO Rita Butera and Dr David Speakman, where they discuss the importance of breast screening and the vital role consumer voices play in shaping care.

This National Volunteer Week, we thank Sue, and all our volunteers for the passion, expertise and commitment they bring to our community.
