TGA suspends sale and use of eight models of breast implants

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has suspended eight models of breast implants for six months, while safety and performance concerns are addressed.

The TGA undertook a review of breast implants and breast tissue expanders following reports of over 100 cases of Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), including four deaths. BIA-ALCL is a rare type of lymphoma that can develop around breast implants.

In July, TGA announced its proposed regulatory action concerning some textured implants and tissue expanders. At the time, breast implants maker Allergan announced a voluntary, worldwide recall of BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders. The TGA announced that Emergo Airxpanders Aeroform tissue expanders were also voluntarily removed from the Australian market.

If you are concerned about your breast implants, you are advised to speak with your doctor.
