Breasts are made up of a mixture of fibrous, glandular tissue and fatty tissue. Your breasts are considered dense if you have a lot of fibrous or glandular tissue but not much fat.
It's estimated 2 million Australian women have dense breasts, so how do you know if it effects you?
The firmness of your breasts won’t be an indication of density, nor how heavy they feel.
While you will not be able to feel if you have dense breasts, it is important to be aware of the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you have an unusual change in your breasts such as a lump, nipple discharge or pain we suggest you see your doctor to ensure you receive the most appropriate care.
BreastScreen Australia recommends that a regular breast screen remains the best way of monitoring for any change in breast tissue with early detection giving women the best chance of successful treatment and recovery.
If you are concerned about breast density, you can call Cancer Council Victoria on 13 11 20 to talk to a cancer nurse.
