Ovarian cancer patients' tissue samples to be tested for BRCA gene mutation

Testing will soon begin in Melbourne to see if 11,000 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer between 2001 and are carriers of the BRCA mutations. Linked to breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s Trackback program will be the first program that actively finds women who missed the opportunity to be tested for both mutations.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Federal Government would give $3 million to the project and that this project would help women take preventative measures after understanding their risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer.
