Maroondah Breast Cancer Centre responds to rapidly ageing population

BreastScreen Victoria welcomes Thursday’s funding announcement by the State Government of Victoria for the Maroondah Breast Cancer Centre, as part of a $10 million investment provided in the 2016/17 Victorian Budget.

The Maroondah Breast Cancer Centre will bring together breast screening, breast oncology, medical care plus vital support services in a one-stop shop which currently exist in different locations.

The Maroondah Breast Cancer Centre will include a second mammography screening room, which will allow an additional 5520 women to be screened each year. Access to the busy hospital area will also be improved with the inclusion of extra parking spaces as part of the project.

The Honorable Jill Hennessy, MP, Minister for Health and Ambulance Services was joined by the Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region Shaun Leane along with BreastScreen Victoria CEO Vicki Pridmore for the announcement.

“By the time we reach our 50s practically all of us are likely to have encountered breast cancer in one form or another - either personally through friends or loved ones,” said Ms Pridmore. “This is the reason I am thrilled to be part of this commitment by government to building an accessible modern facility here at the Maroondah hospital site.”

The population of Maroondah is growing steadily, with nearly 20% growth over the next two decades. More importantly, the population of Maroondah is ageing at a significantly faster rate than that of the Eastern Region and metropolitan Melbourne.

“The two biggest risks for breast cancer are being a woman and ageing,” continued Ms Pridmore. “75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50.

“We therefore know that there will be significant impact on local health services and this breast cancer centre as part of the Maroondah Hospital precinct will no doubt be a welcome addition.”
