Julia Gillard hopes Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy will encourage women to get breast checks

15 May 2013

Julia Gillard says she hopes Angelina Jolie's brave decision to have a double mastectomy sees Australian women have their own breasts examined.

The Prime Minister said she was shocked to hear Jolie, 37, had made the tough call to prevent breast cancer.

"Obviously she's in the world's eye, she's so, so famous,'' Ms Gillard told the Today Show.

"But lots of women make that decision in Australia too.''

She said she hoped an important health message would be felt as people learned the news.

I can't imagine being confronted with that decision but I guess it reminds us all that we've got to get all of the checking, all of the health stuff done,'' she said.

"And if one woman is out there today reading about Angelina Jolie and then saying gee it's been a while since I've been to breast screen, I hope she goes.''
