About Screening Print E-mail

Having regular screening mammograms is the best way to find breast cancer early, before any symptoms are noticed and when treatment is likely to be most successful.

Mammography screening is recommended every 2 years for women aged 50-69 without breast symptoms, as this is when screening has been shown to be most effective. Women aged 40-49, or 70 and over, may also be screened if they wish. If a change from the usual appearance is found by mammography screening, BreastScreen Victoria provides assessment by a multi-disciplinary team, up to the point of definite diagnosis. If a breast cancer is found, women are referred for follow-up through the usual health care services, not within the BreastScreen program. BreastScreen Victoria has published a range of resources about mammography screening. These are available on this website, from your nearest BreastScreen Victoria service, general practitioner and local community health centre. They are available in 12 languages as well as English.
